Dark Pool

Dark pool trade data and institutional activity signals

Open in App

Overview

Dark Pool displays trade data from dark pools (private exchanges used by institutional investors). These trades often represent significant institutional positioning and can provide clues about large-scale buying or selling activity that doesn't appear on public exchanges until after execution.

Interpreting Dark Pool Data

  • High dark pool percentage (above 40-50%) suggests significant institutional involvement
  • Large block trades indicate institutional positioning (as opposed to retail flow)
  • Net buying activity in dark pools may precede upward price movement
  • Net selling activity may indicate institutional distribution
  • Compare dark pool activity levels to the stock's historical average

How to Use

  • Monitor stocks with unusually high dark pool activity relative to their norm
  • Cross-reference with Volume Alerts for comprehensive volume analysis
  • Use dark pool data as a supplementary signal for institutional sentiment
  • Pay attention to sustained dark pool buying/selling over multiple sessions

Note

Dark pool data is reported with a delay and represents a subset of total institutional activity. It should be used as one data point among many in your analysis process.

Combining with Other Tools

  • Cross-reference with Volume Alerts — unusual volume with high dark pool percentage is a strong institutional signal
  • Check Institutional (13F) for quarterly confirmation of dark pool accumulation patterns
  • Use Insider Intelligence alongside dark pool data — if both insiders and institutions are buying, the signal is especially strong
  • Monitor dark pool selling in technically weak stocks (low Technical Score) for distribution confirmation
